Der Teufelhof Basel: art hotel and gallery hotel in the Old Town
Two 18th-century townhouses on Leonhardsgraben, an art hotel, a gallery hotel and the Atelier restaurant: the most original address in Basel's Old Town.

Our verdict
The Teufelhof is not an ordinary hotel but a house of culture and hospitality. For about 37 years it has combined two 18th-century townhouses with art, food and a small theatre.
If you are looking for a place with character, this is it. If you expect a large bathroom and air conditioning in every room, perhaps not.
Art hotel and gallery hotel
In the Kunsthotel, artists designed the rooms; in the Galeriehotel the works change like an exhibition. Some rooms have a kitchenette, and the house is announcing an additional Designhotel for 2026.
On the ground floor the Atelier restaurant serves lunch and dinner. The hotel is open 365 days a year, with a reception staffed around the clock.
Location and walking times
Barfüsserplatz is four minutes away, Marktplatz six, Basel SBB station 15 minutes on foot. Messeplatz is 20 minutes away, so fair visitors are better off taking the tram from Barfüsserplatz.
Our advice
Ask for a room facing the courtyard: guests report noise on the street side and above the restaurant. If you struggle with heat, ask for an air-conditioned room in summer.
Whether breakfast is included depends on the rate. The BaselCard comes with the visitor tax.
