Art Basel tickets in Basel: which ticket for whom, where to buy it and what costs extra

Art Basel 2027 takes place from 17 June 2027 to 20 June 2027 at Messe Basel. As of October 2026, Art Basel had not yet published prices or the sale date for 2027.

What is known is what tickets cost in 2026, from 40 CHF for an evening to a vernissage ticket at 215 CHF. This page helps you choose, explains how to buy and says what a ticket does not include.

Which tickets were there in 2026?

For the day ticket, sources give 70 francs and one tourism site 69, apparently older or outdated information. For the reductions we rely on the source of our Art Basel guide; the more recent research for this page found no official table.

A French events portal lists a vernissage ticket at 215 francs with a glass of champagne. Art Basel itself describes the preview days as invitation-only, and the sources do not allow us to say for sure whether the vernissage ticket was on open sale.

Which ticket suits which visit?

VisitTicketThe maths

The day ticket is the cheapest per hour if you make full use of the day. If you only have three hours, After Work costs less money but more per hour, and three hours only shows part of the 290 galleries.

For most first-time visitors, a day ticket on a weekday, starting early in the morning, is the best choice. Unlimited fans can add the Unlimited Night on Thursday evening, which opens Hall 1 only.

Where do you buy tickets?

For 2026, Art Basel stated that tickets were sold exclusively in its official online shop. A Basel Tourism page also mentions sales points at the information desks in SBB station and the Badischer Bahnhof, which contradicts that "exclusively" and may be older.

The safe choice is Art Basel's official shop. For 2027 the ticket page has been announced, but not the prices or the sale date, and nobody guarantees that tickets will be left at a box office on the day.

  • Check the date: the day ticket is valid for the day printed on it, not any day you like.
  • Name and ID: whether tickets are personalised and ID is required is set out in that year's terms.
  • Save offline: download the ticket and keep a screenshot and the purchase confirmation.

How do you spot fake or overpriced tickets?

We found no rules in our sources on resale, name changes or refunds for 2026 and 2027. If you buy outside the official shop, there is therefore no guarantee the ticket will be accepted at the entrance.

  • screenshots of tickets on social media;
  • tickets well above the official price;
  • payment by bank transfer to private individuals;
  • a QR code with no proof of purchase;
  • websites imitating the Art Basel name;
  • preview or VIP access sold as a normal ticket.

VIP cards are not for sale: they are personalised and issued by Art Basel or the galleries, as our guide to Art Basel explains. If you buy VIP access online, you are very likely buying something that is not valid.

Room first, ticket second: ticket prices for Art Basel from 17 June 2027 to 20 June 2027 come out late, while rooms run short early. The well-rated places to stay in Basel during Art Basel can already be booked with free cancellation. For the city around the fair there are tours and activities in Basel.

What does a ticket not include?

  • Museums: a fair ticket includes no museum, and the museums have their own prices and opening hours.
  • Guided tours: according to Art Basel, a tour ticket does not include fair admission, and vice versa.
  • Parcours: the works around the city are free, and the official tour cost 25 CHF in 2026.
  • Other fairs: Liste, founded in 1996, is a separate fair with its own tickets.
  • Trams, cloakroom, food, private events: extra.

We could not confirm a combined Art Basel and Liste or Art Basel and museums ticket for any year. If an offer says "museums included", read that year's terms carefully.

Is a museum visit worth it during fair week?

Yes, but with its own ticket and opening hours. In 2026 the Kunstmuseum was mostly open from 9am to 6pm during fair week, with the main building and new building opening only at 11am on Thursday and the Gegenwart open throughout from 9am.

The Fondation Beyeler opens its Louise Bourgeois exhibition on 13 June 2027, a few days before the fair, see Fondation Beyeler in Riehen. Every museum with prices and passes is compared in museums in Basel, and the Kunstmuseum Basel has its own guide.

When is it least crowded?

Art Basel publishes no figures by day or hour, only the total: 90,000 visits in 2026 after 88,000 in 2025, VIP days included. What follows is based on experience.

  • Busier: preview and vernissage days, the first hours of the public days, Saturday, and the middle of the day between 12pm and 4pm.
  • Quieter: Thursday morning and early afternoon, late Friday afternoon with After Work, and Sunday morning.

The fair does not publish density per hall, waiting times at security or attendance by hour. How to make the most of the fair, with sectors and routes, is in our guide to Art Basel.

What does a fair day cost in total?

The ticket is only the start. On top of the 70 francs come trams if you have no guest card, food during fair week from 45 to 100 CHF by our benchmarks, a museum and above all the room, which is at its most expensive that week.

Guests of Basel accommodation travel to Messeplatz free with the BaselCard, but it gives no discount on the fair ticket, as BaselCard and Mobility Ticket explains. When to book your room is covered in Art Basel hotels: prices and deadlines.

Why is Art Basel so sought after?

Art Basel was founded in Basel in 1970 by the gallerists Trudl Bruckner, Ernst Beyeler and Balz Hilt, and the very first edition drew more than 16,000 visitors. In 2026, according to Art Basel, representatives of more than 270 museums and foundations attended.

That density of galleries, collectors and institutions is the appeal, and it explains why the fair fills the city in June. How Basel differs from the editions in Paris, Miami Beach, Hong Kong and Qatar is covered in Art Basel: the five fairs compared.

Going to the fair as a group: travelling as three or four, you often save during fair week with an apartment rather than several rooms. The holiday apartments in Basel during Art Basel can be filtered by location and cancellation terms, and from Kleinbasel you can walk to Messeplatz.

How to get to Messeplatz without a car and without traffic jams is explained in Messe Basel.
