Basel train stations: SBB, Badischer Bahnhof and SNCF, where do you change for where?
Basel has three stations and four names, and "Basel" on your ticket is not enough. Which train leaves from where, how much time to allow for a connection, how to switch between SBB and Badischer Bahnhof, which app sells which ticket and where the pitfalls are.

Basel has three stations, and in timetables they appear under at least five names: Basel SBB, Basel SNCF, Basel Bad Bf, Basel Badischer Bahnhof and Basel St. Johann. If you only read "Basel", you can easily end up at the wrong end of town.
This page tells you which train leaves from where, how much time to allow for a change, how to get between the stations and which pitfalls lurk with tickets from three countries.
Which station for which destination?
| Name on the ticket | What it is | For where |
|---|---|---|
| Basel SBB / Basel SNCF | Switzerland's main station in Basel, with its own French section | Zurich, Bern, Lucerne, Paris, Colmar, Mulhouse, most connections |
| Basel Bad Bf / Basel Badischer Bahnhof | Deutsche Bahn station in the north-east of the city | ICE to Frankfurt and Germany, regional trains to Freiburg im Breisgau |
| Basel St. Johann | Small station in the north-west, near the Novartis Campus | S-Bahn and regional trains, rarely useful for changing |
The most important rule: Basel SBB and Basel Bad Bf are not the same station. French trains usually arrive at Basel SNCF, a section attached to Basel SBB with its own access and possible customs checks.
On your ticket, always compare the exact station name, the operator and the platform, not just the word "Basel". The location of the three stations is shown on our map of Basel.

What does SBB station offer?
Basel SBB lies south of the centre on Centralbahnstrasse. The station is open to travellers at all times, with shops, restaurants, a pharmacy and lockers; according to SBB the shopping centre has around 50 shops open 365 days a year, each with its own hours.
From here leave the trains to Zurich, Bern and Lucerne, the TGV Lyria to Paris, trains to Colmar and Mulhouse and a large share of international EC and ICE services. Outside the station, trams leave for the centre, the Messe and the museums.
The lockers are on the first basement level and cost from 5 CHF for six hours in low season. All sizes and prices are listed in luggage storage, toilets and drinking water in Basel.
Where can you leave luggage at SBB station?
An earlier SBB figure counts 74 S lockers, 90 M and 37 L, plus the large XL, XXM and XXL formats. The basic rental covers six hours, the maximum is 96 hours, and prices rise in high season.
The large lockers are the scarcest and often the first to go on fair days. If you are travelling with bulky luggage, leave it at your hotel instead; many hotels store bags after check-out.
What do you need to know about Badischer Bahnhof?
Badischer Bahnhof is in the north-east on Schwarzwaldallee and belongs to the German rail network. Mainly DB trains stop here: to Freiburg im Breisgau, Karlsruhe and Frankfurt.
SBB's page on Badischer Bahnhof mentions parking but gives no precise accessibility details. That does not mean access is impossible, only that the facilities are not documented there.
One peculiarity is the two groups of lockers, one before and one after customs, one taking euro coins and the other franc coins. If you only carry cards, you have a problem.
How do you get between SBB and Badischer Bahnhof?
| Means of transport | Time |
|---|---|
| Tram, direct or nearly direct depending on the line | about 10 to 15 minutes |
| Taxi | often 10 to 20 minutes, depending on traffic |
| On foot | about 30 to 40 minutes |
Allow more than the bare journey time: changing stations means getting off, leaving the station, crossing town and finding the platform at the other end. If the first train is late, your buffer vanishes quickly.
Basel St. Johann can be reached from SBB station by tram or bus in about 15 to 25 minutes, or on foot in 35 to 45. It is not recommended as an interchange for international journeys unless your ticket requires it.
For a late connection: if you arrive in the evening and leave early in the morning, a night near SBB station saves you the rush. The hotels in Basel with prices and cancellation terms can be sorted on the map by walking time to the station, and the visitor tax brings the BaselCard for the tram.

There is no binding minimum connection time for every case, and the time apps show is not a commercial guarantee. Our rules of thumb for Basel SBB, drawn from our research:
- Between two Swiss trains: 10 to 15 minutes can be enough if the train is on time and the platform close.
- Simple international change in the same station: about 20 minutes.
- From a Swiss train to a TGV or ICE: 30 to 45 minutes.
- Separate tickets, a customs exit or a change between SBB and Badischer Bahnhof: 60 minutes or more.
With separately bought tickets, a delay to the first train does not necessarily protect the second ticket. If you can, buy a through ticket.
How long are journeys from Basel?
| Destination | Usual journey time | Station |
|---|---|---|
| Zurich | 1 hr to 1 hr 15 min | Basel SBB |
| Bern | 55 min to 1 hr 10 min | Basel SBB |
| Lucerne | 1 hr to 1 hr 20 min, sometimes with a change | Basel SBB |
| Paris | About 3 hr to 3 hr 20 min | Basel SNCF / SBB |
| Colmar | About 45 min to 1 hr | Basel SNCF / SBB |
| Mulhouse | About 20 to 30 minutes | Basel SNCF / SBB |
| Freiburg im Breisgau | About 40 to 50 minutes | Basel Bad Bf or Basel SBB |
| Frankfurt | About 3 hr to 3 hr 30 min | Basel Bad Bf or Basel SBB, depending on the train |
These ranges are planning values, not a timetable. Engineering works on cross-border lines can cancel a train, replace a section with buses or change the departure station, so check your connection on the day.

Where are customs checks carried out?
Basel sits on two borders, and both run through stations. At SBB station, the SNCF section has its own access with possible customs checks; at Badischer Bahnhof, a customs container separates the German from the Swiss side.
No checks does not mean no rules: for goods, alcohol, tobacco and cash, the regulations of the country you are entering apply. If you are looking for a locker at Badischer Bahnhof, you need to know which side of customs you are on.
Which public holidays change the timetable?
A public holiday does not mean nothing runs on Basel's local transport; often the Sunday timetable applies, with lower frequencies. 1 August, the Swiss national day, matters most, along with the public holidays of the Canton of Basel-Stadt, which do not match those in France or Germany.
Ticket offices, shops and restaurants in the stations may be closed on Sundays, public holidays or in the evening, even if the station itself is open. There is no shared calendar for SBB, DB, SNCF, BVB and the shops.

Which app sells which ticket?
- SBB Mobile: for Swiss trains and Basel local transport tickets.
- DB Navigator: for ICE, German trains and DB tickets, handy at Badischer Bahnhof.
- SNCF Connect: for TGV, TER and French services; cross-border tickets are not always sold there on the same terms.
Download the apps before your trip, create the account and save the ticket offline if possible. A screenshot is not enough if the ticket is dynamic, and you should carry ID anyway.
A ticket from Switzerland, France or Germany does not come with the same exchange and refund rules. Cross-border saver fares are often tied to one train, one station or one national section: a Paris to Basel ticket is not valid for a departure from Badischer Bahnhof.
What are the pitfalls?
- Mixing up SBB and Bad Bf: the most common and most expensive mistake, especially with hotels described as "near Basel".
- A Swiss ticket for a journey in France or Germany: not valid there, even if the train leaves from Basel.
- Buying after departure: on Basel local transport, a ticket bought after boarding is generally treated as invalid. No single list publishes the amount of the fine.
- Fake inspectors: anyone demanding immediate cash payment is not a real inspector.
- Dynamic currency conversion: pay in francs at the terminal, not in the home currency it offers.
How do you get from the station into town?
From SBB station the tram gets you to the centre in a few minutes, and to Messeplatz in about 10 to 15 minutes depending on line and waiting time. The Kunstmuseum is close, the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen is a longer ride, and the Messe is to the north-east.
There is no tram to EuroAirport, but bus 50 runs from SBB station, taking about 17 minutes according to TNW. More in EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg, and trams and fares in getting around Basel.
If you are picking someone up by car, SBB station has the Centralbahn, Post and Bahnhof Süd car parks. Whether they have space right now is shown on Basel parking live.
How accessible are the stations?
Basel SBB has lifts, step-free routes on some paths and connection assistance from the rail operators. The details depend on the platform, the train and the wheelchair, and for international trains it is recommended to book assistance.
Not every change is barrier-free: the SNCF section may have its own routes, some platforms need a lift, and changing between two stations means a trip across town. The safest approach is a through ticket, booked assistance and at least 30 minutes' buffer at Basel SBB.
What changes during Art Basel?
During fair week, from 17 June 2027 to 20 June 2027, direct trains are fuller and more expensive, lockers may be fully booked and the trams to the Messe are crowded. Allow more time for every change that week.
During Fasnacht too, trains and the station are unusually full at night, as the Morgestraich starts at 4am. If you are coming for the fair, read our guide to Art Basel first.
For rail travellers making day trips: if you are heading from Basel to Zurich, Colmar or Freiburg, it is best to stay near SBB station. The three-star hotels in Basel around Centralbahnplatz and Gundeldingen are often cheaper than in the Old Town, and the BaselCard covers the tram into town.
