Park and ride in Basel: Oberwil, St. Jakob and the options on the edge of town

Basel has no dense network of park-and-ride sites with a combined ticket. What it does have: the Oberwil P+R with number-plate recognition and a tram link, the cantonal car parks on the edge of town and a few rules you need to know before you set off.

Park and ride in Basel: Oberwil, St. Jakob and the options on the edge of town

If you drive to Basel and want to leave the car on the edge of town, you will find less park and ride than you might expect. The canton speaks of sites near stations and tram stops, but publishes no list with rates, opening hours and capacity for each one.

One site is well documented: the Oberwil P+R in the canton of Basel-Landschaft, connected to trams 10 and 17. This page explains how it works, what it costs and what alternatives exist if it is full or registration fails.

How does the Oberwil P+R work?

The Oberwil P+R is a covered car park south-west of Basel, run by the BLT transport company. From there, tram lines 10 and 17 run straight into central Basel.

Since 13 April 2026 the car park has recognised cars by their number plate. To park, you register beforehand in the Skidata online shop, enter your vehicle with its plate and book a space if needed.

  1. Create an account in the Skidata online shop before you travel.
  2. Enter the vehicle and its plate, checking every letter and digit.
  3. If needed, reserve a space for the date you want.
  4. Drive in with the registered car: day spaces are on the third floor.
  5. Pay by credit card; Visa and Mastercard are accepted.
  6. Buy a tram ticket separately, as parking does not include public transport.

According to BLT, you can enter and leave around the clock. The operator does not publish a calendar of closures, for instance on public holidays or during fairs.

What does park and ride cost in Basel?

Covered monthly space, first and second floors120 CHF a month2026

The documents do not say whether the day rate covers 24 hours from entry or runs until midnight. For a fair visit arriving the evening before or returning after midnight, that matters, so ask BLT beforehand.

The tram ticket comes on top of the parking fee. The "Basel" day pass costs 10.70 CHF; whether it covers the trip from Oberwil depends on the zone, which the machine shows. Zones and fares are explained in getting around Basel.

Count the second night: parking, tram ticket and the trip back in the evening add up once a visit lasts two days. Accommodation in Basel brings the BaselCard with the visitor tax, and with it free trams in the Basel zones. The hotels in Basel with prices and cancellation terms also show which ones have their own garage.

What are the pitfalls at the Oberwil P+R?

  • Plate not registered: without registration the car park does not recognise your car. The source does not say whether you can sign up afterwards at the entrance.
  • A typo in the plate: one wrong character, a foreign plate in an unfamiliar format or a hire car instead of your own is enough not to be recognised. The operator publishes no list of penalties for this.
  • Credit card only: Visa and Mastercard, nothing else confirmed. Cash, debit cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay are not mentioned, so bring a physical credit card.
  • Tram not included: paying 12 francs and still riding the tram without a ticket is the most common mix-up. The ticket is extra.
  • Other providers' apps: there is no confirmation that EasyPark, TWINT or other international apps work in Oberwil. Do not count on it.

What alternatives are there on the edge of town?

The cantonal St. Jakob car park is on the edge of the city and, according to the canton, open around the clock 365 days a year, like the other five cantonal car parks. Our sources give no specific park-and-ride rate, so the cantonal tariff applies: 3 CHF an hour during the day and 25 CHF for 24 hours.

The ELYS is cheaper, at 2 CHF an hour during the day, 1 CHF at night and 20 CHF for 24 hours. All rates are compared in parking in Basel.

Whether spaces are free right now is shown for 16 city-centre car parks on our page Basel parking live. The sites on the edge of town are not included there.

Is the EuroAirport car park an alternative?

Search engines often list EuroAirport's car parks under "Basel". A private source gives the F5 Proxi car park at €25 for 24 hours, with around 700 spaces, disabled spaces and a winter closure.

It is not urban park and ride, though: the car park is in France, is paid in euros and serves the airport. According to the airport, the terminal is open daily from 4am to midnight, which does not mean every car park keeps the same hours. If you are flying, everything is in EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg.

Is park and ride worth it for Art Basel and the Herbstmesse?

During the big fairs the centre is at its busiest, and parking on the edge of town seems obvious. For Oberwil, however, BLT gives neither a capacity nor a guarantee that reserved spaces will be free on arrival.

During Art Basel you pay for three things separately: parking, tram ticket and fair admission. The fair's dates and prices are in our guide to Art Basel, and those of the funfair in Basel Herbstmesse.

During Fasnacht the Old Town is closed while the parades are on. Then the edge of town is the only sensible choice, and the tram takes you to the fringe of the action.

Are there disabled parking spaces?

For Oberwil, the documents give neither the number nor the width of disabled spaces, nor any lifts or the route to the tram stop. A fully accessible chain from the garage to the Messe therefore cannot be promised.

On public ground in the city of Basel, parking in reserved spaces with a disabled parking card is free and unlimited in time, according to the canton. If you depend on accessibility, call ahead.

Is there an alternative without a car?

If you stay overnight in Basel-Landschaft, you receive the Gästepass+ there for 3.80 CHF per person per night. According to Baselland Tourism, it gives unlimited use of regional public transport during your stay, including arrival and departure, and also covers the trip to and from EuroAirport.

Stay in Basel-Stadt and the visitor tax gets you the BaselCard. The car then becomes unnecessary for the length of your visit and can stay in the garage or at home.

Book the garage with the room: if you would rather sleep centrally and only move the car on arrival, pick a hotel near the tram hubs. The three-star hotels in Basel are often near SBB station or in Kleinbasel, and the BaselCard lets you travel on for free from there.
