Live parking availability in Basel: free spaces in the 16 guidance-system car parks

Basel runs a permanent parking guidance system that reports the free spaces in 16 city-centre car parks. This page reads those figures directly from the system on every visit and shows them in a table below, sorted by district.

Underneath you will find what the figures mean and what they do not, which car park suits which destination and what an hour costs.

Each pin is a car park named in OpenStreetMap. Tap it, then Go: the route opens in driving mode.

How many spaces are free in Basel's car parks?

The system sorts its car parks into three groups: Centre West, Centre North and Centre South. The "Free" column is read again on every visit, as displayed by the guidance system at 7:21am. The number of short-stay spaces is the one each car park lists on the guidance system's own pages, checked on 23 October 2026.

At the Messe car park the display can exceed the number of short-stay spaces: at 7:19am on 23 October 2026 the system showed 777 free spaces against 722 short-stay spaces listed. We give both figures exactly as the source publishes them.

If a car park shows no figure, the system reports it as full or closed. The table then keeps the last stored value, which is why the time stamp is worth a glance.

How should you read the display?

The figure is what the system reports, not a reservation. A few minutes often pass between checking your phone and driving in, and a car park with only a handful of spaces can fill up in that time.

The canton publishes neither the update interval nor the delay between a car entering and the count dropping. Nor does it say whether reserved spaces or those let to permit holders are included. So we only show what the guidance system reports and claim nothing more.

A second limit: the system only knows its 16 connected car parks. Blue-zone and white-zone street parking and private garages do not appear, and street parking is exactly where the situation changes fastest.

Which car park suits which destination?

Basel is small enough to reach everything on foot from a car park, but the Old Town sits on a hill and the Rhine separates it from Kleinbasel. Picking the right car park saves you a drive through the narrow lanes.

  • Old Town, Minster, Barfüsserplatz: Elisabethen and Steinen for the southern Old Town, City and Storchen for Marktplatz and the Rathaus. From Storchen it is a few minutes to the Mittlere Brücke.
  • Kunstmuseum and St. Alban: the Kunstmuseum car park right on St. Alban-Graben, or Anfos and Aeschen as alternatives.
  • Messe Basel: the Messe, Europe and Clarahuus car parks. On fair days these three fill first, and then Badischer Bahnhof with a short walk is the better bet.
  • SBB station: Centralbahn and Post for the north side, Bahnhof Süd for Gundeldingen. Half an hour is enough to meet a train, though the tariff may count it as a full unit.

Every car park is also marked on our map of Basel and its districts. If you are travelling on from the station, the connections are in Basel's stations: SBB, Badischer Bahnhof and SNCF.

If the car stays for two nights: at a day rate of 25 CHF in a cantonal car park, parking belongs in your accommodation budget. The hotels in Basel with prices and cancellation terms show which ones charge separately for parking, and hotel guests ride the tram for free with the BaselCard anyway.

What does an hour in a car park cost?

The cantonal tariff for the state-run car parks has three time bands. From Monday to Saturday an hour costs 1 CHF between midnight and 8am, 3 CHF between 8am and 7pm and 2 CHF in the evening until midnight.

On Sundays the rate is 1 CHF an hour all day, but only on Sundays that are not public holidays. The day rate is 25 CHF and the 30-day card 215 CHF.

Not every car park charges the same way. The Kunstmuseum car park asks 3 CHF between 7am and 7pm, 2 CHF during the day on Sundays and public holidays, and no more than 30 CHF a day. A lost ticket there costs 50 CHF.

Charges apply per unit started, in 30-minute steps at several car parks. Stay 35 minutes and you will often pay for an hour. All rates side by side, with street-parking zones and fines, are in parking in Basel: car parks, prices and the blue zone.

What does the ParkSmart Basel app do?

The canton points to the free ParkSmart Basel app, which shows parking options and lets you pay for certain spaces. For residents it is the most convenient option.

For visitors from abroad it remains unclear whether registration requires a Swiss phone number or a Swiss card: the terms are not published in our sources. Download the app before you leave and test the sign-up at home, not at the barrier.

At the Kunstmuseum car park the operator accepts Swiss franc coins and notes, credit cards, Maestro, Postcard, SwissPass, Parkingpay and TWINT. An international credit card plus a little cash in francs covers almost every case.

What if the car parks are full?

During major fairs the Centre North group is hit first. During Art Basel in June, the Herbstmesse in autumn and big events in the halls, Messe, Europe and Clarahuus are under the most pressure. The canton does not publish occupancy statistics for those days.

  • Head south instead: the car parks near SBB station are less in demand on fair days, and trams 1 and 2 run from there to the Messe.
  • Park on the edge of town: park and ride with a tram into the centre; the sites are listed in park and ride in Basel.
  • Use the ELYS: this cantonal car park is open around the clock and costs 2 CHF an hour during the day and 20 CHF for 24 hours.

For fair week itself, see our guide to Art Basel and the page on the Basel Herbstmesse, both of which explain how to get there without a car.

Are there disabled parking spaces?

The cantonal car parks and many places on public land have reserved spaces. With a disabled parking card, parking in these spaces on public ground is free and unlimited in time, according to the canton.

The guidance system does not show whether such a space is free. Space widths, the route to the lift and the recognition of foreign permits are not published centrally either: call the car park before you go.

Is a car worth it in Basel at all?

For a day trip from neighbouring France or southern Baden, a car is convenient as long as it stays in the car park. Within the city, trams and walking are almost always quicker, and the tram runs right up to the border.

Anyone staying overnight in Basel gets the BaselCard with the visitor tax and rides the tram for free. Fares and zones for everyone else are explained in getting around Basel: trams, buses and fares. If you fly in, the way into town is on our page about EuroAirport.

Stay central, leave the car: if you sleep between SBB station, the Old Town and Kleinbasel, you will not need a car in Basel. The places to stay in Basel by location and price can be filtered on the map, and our district guide tells you which area suits which kind of stay.

Which district suits which stay is covered in where to stay in Basel. And if you are coming for the collection, plan your visit with our page on the Kunstmuseum Basel, whose car park is right next door.

Frequently asked questions

Where can you see free parking spaces in Basel?
On the Parkleitsystem Basel website and in the table above, which reads the figures for 16 car parks from the guidance system on every visit. The signs on the approach roads show the same values. Street parking and private garages are not included.
Which car park in Basel is the cheapest?
Among the verified rates, the ELYS, at 2 CHF an hour during the day and 20 CHF for 24 hours. The cantonal car parks charge 3 CHF an hour during the day, and 1 CHF at night and on Sundays that are not public holidays.
Where do you park in Basel for the Messe?
At the Messe, Europe or Clarahuus car parks, all three on Messeplatz. On big fair days they fill early: then Badischer Bahnhof or a car park at SBB station, with trams 1 and 2 to the Messe, is the better choice.
How up to date is the free-space display?
The figure is read again on every visit and carries the guidance system's time stamp. The canton does not publish how often the system itself updates. With only a few spaces left, a car park may be full by the time you arrive.
Can you pay by card in Basel car parks?
At the Kunstmuseum car park, yes: credit cards, Maestro, Postcard, SwissPass, Parkingpay and TWINT, plus francs in cash. For the other car parks the accepted payment methods are not published consistently, so an international credit card and a little cash are the safe choice.
