Is Basel expensive? A budget for hotels, food, transport and museums in Swiss francs

Basel is expensive, especially for rooms and restaurants, but the guest card makes trams and museums cheaper. What each item costs, a daily budget you can check yourself, what happens when you pay in euros and where the real savings lie.

Is Basel expensive? A budget for hotels, food, transport and museums in Swiss francs

Basel is expensive, most obviously for rooms and restaurant meals. At the same time, every guest at a Basel hotel or hostel rides the trams for free, and the same card lowers admission at many museums.

This page gives, for each item, the amount we can back up with a source, works out a daily budget from it and points out where the sources contradict each other. All amounts are in Swiss francs and for 2026 unless stated otherwise.

There are no official average hotel prices by category, month and district. Our ranges are based on eight city-centre hotels, leaving out the luxury hotel Les Trois Rois, which asked CHF 512 on the same Friday, and only apply to the nights given.

What does a daily budget look like?

Let us work out an ordinary day for one person, outside trade fair weeks, using the sourced items. The food figures are benchmarks from our research, explained in eating in Basel.

ItemBudgetMid-range
Bed or half a double roomhostel bed, 35 to 65 CHFhalf a hotel room, depending on season
Visitor tax4.20 CHF4.20 CHF
Breakfastbakery, 8 to 20 CHFcafé, 8 to 25 CHF
LunchMarkthalle, 15 to 35 CHFset lunch, 25 to 45 CHF
Dinnersnack bar, 8 to 20 CHFneighbourhood restaurant with a drink, 45 to 70 CHF
Tramsfree with the BaselCardfree with the BaselCard
One museumTinguely, 18 CHFKunstmuseum, 25 CHF

Excluding accommodation, the budget day comes to roughly 50 to 100 francs and the mid-range day to roughly 105 to 170 francs. With a room you add the price of the night, which multiplies during Art Basel week.

This is a calculation, not a statistic: drinks, tips and a second museum quickly shift it. But it shows where the money goes, first on the room and then on dinner.

What does a weekend for two cost?

Take two people, two nights in a double room, outside trade fairs, with mid-range meals, the Kunstmuseum and the Fondation Beyeler. Excluding the room rate, the sums come out as follows.

  • Visitor tax: two people, two nights, so four times 4.20 CHF, 16.80 francs in total.
  • Food: 78 to 140 francs per person per day for breakfast, a set lunch and dinner, so 312 to 560 francs for two people over two days.
  • Museums with the BaselCard: two Kunstmuseum and two Fondation tickets, 83.50 francs in total instead of 110 francs without the card.
  • Trams: free with the BaselCard.

Without the room, the weekend therefore costs about 410 to 660 francs for two. The room for two nights comes on top, and that is where the biggest gap lies between a quiet week and Art Basel.

What does the BaselCard make cheaper?

Anyone staying in Basel accommodation and paying the visitor tax gets the BaselCard. It makes trams and buses free in zones 10, 11, 13, 14 and 15 and lowers admission, to 18.75 CHF at the Kunstmuseum and 23 CHF at the Fondation Beyeler.

The sources disagree on how big the museum discount is: Basel Tourism talks of half price at most museums, other guides of 25 per cent. At the Kunstmuseum it is 25 per cent; for any given venue, check at the ticket desk.

The card's scope and zones are also described differently by different sources, as is whether the zoo or the ferries are included. What the card definitely covers and what it does not, and how the Mobility Ticket works in Basel-Landschaft, is explained in BaselCard and Mobility Ticket.

Can you pay in euros in Basel?

Sometimes, but not everywhere. Some hotels, shops and venues at tourist spots accept euros, but change usually comes in francs and at a poor rate.

  • Not guaranteed: small shops often refuse large euro notes, and trams and small purchases need francs or a card.
  • Cards: Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted in hotels, museums and restaurants.
  • Conversion at the terminal: if the machine offers to charge you in euros or pounds, paying in francs is usually cheaper, as your bank then handles the conversion.
  • Prepaid and virtual cards: sometimes fail on SMS verification or a Swiss address.

The safest option is a card with no high foreign fees and a few francs in cash. No source fully documents which apps reject foreign cards or phone numbers, so do not rely on a single app.

Can you get VAT back?

Basel Tourism's prices include VAT at the statutory rate, as everywhere in Switzerland. Non-residents can reclaim it on goods under certain conditions: an export form from the retailer, showing the goods and receipts at customs, actually leaving the country and meeting deadlines.

We could not confirm the minimum amount and procedure for 2026 from an up-to-date customs source, so we give no figure. There is nothing back on food, hotels or services already used, and the refund is not a discount at the till.

Saving on the biggest item: the room decides the budget, and a hostel bed costs 35 to 65 CHF according to a budget guide. The hostels in Basel, like all Basel accommodation, come with the BaselCard and free trams, which makes even an outlying location workable.

What should you sort out before you go?

  • whether your accommodation issues the BaselCard, digitally or on paper, and whether it already covers the journey from the airport;
  • a bank card enabled for payments abroad;
  • the transport app if you want to buy on your phone, and a plan B with a ticket machine, a physical card or francs in cash;
  • for Art Basel week: the room, long before ticket prices are announced.

Whether the guest card saves 25 or 50 per cent at a particular museum, and which special exhibitions are excluded, is best checked with the museum itself. The sources contradict each other here, and the difference quickly adds up to ten francs across two museums.

Where do the real savings lie?

  • Set lunch instead of the evening menu: the most effective lever on food.
  • Use the guest card: free trams and discounts if you stay overnight in Basel.
  • Free museum hours: the Kunstmuseum collection is free on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 5pm to 6pm and on Wednesday from 5pm to 8pm.
  • Young visitors: the Fondation Beyeler is free up to age 25, and many museums are free for children up to 16.
  • Free programme: the Old Town, the Minster, the Pfalz, the Rhine banks and the Spalentor cost nothing, as things to see in Basel shows.
  • Festivals with no entry fee: the Herbstmesse squares and the Christmas market are free to enter and you only pay for what you buy, see Basel autumn fair.
  • Avoid trade fair weeks: if you are flexible, do not come during Art Basel, Fasnacht or big trade fairs.

If museums are your focus, work out first whether a pass pays off: the Museums-PASS costs 153 CHF a year according to its price page and rarely pays for itself over a weekend. The passes are compared in museums in Basel.

Is a hotel in Saint-Louis or Weil am Rhein worth it?

Rooms can be cheaper across the border, but the real saving only shows once you deduct the tram or train, travel time, extra zones, changes, late journeys back, exchange rates and card fees. There is no Basel guest card there.

The option mainly makes sense when Basel is full or very expensive, in other words during Art Basel week. How the border towns compare with Basel's districts is in Where to stay in Basel?

What happens to prices during Art Basel?

During fair week, in 2027 from 17 June 2027 to 20 June 2027, hotel prices rise the most. By how much varies widely between sources.

One travel guide talks of a 150 to 250% mark-up and advises booking 8 to 12 months ahead. A hotel guide gives 40 to 80% for June, neither of them backed by an official price series.

Both figures are observations, not statistics, and we do not choose between them. What is certain is that booking late costs more, as Art Basel hotels: prices and deadlines explains.

Is Basel more expensive than Zurich or Freiburg?

There is no solid answer with figures: our sources contain no prices collected on the same day, in the same categories and at the same hotel level for Basel, Zurich and Freiburg. Any percentage would be a guess.

In qualitative terms, Zurich is at least as expensive as Basel for rooms and restaurants. Freiburg and the towns on the French side work in euros and are often cheaper for hotels and food, though not guaranteed at weekends and during major events.

Basel wins where the guest card applies: free trams, cheaper museums and plenty to do on foot. If you are planning day trips to the neighbouring cities, journey times and tickets are in day trips from Basel.

Which costs come as a surprise?

  • Fare dodging: the TNW charges a CHF 100 surcharge the first time, so buy your ticket before travelling if you have no BaselCard.
  • The wrong zone: a city ticket does not necessarily cover the airport, the other side of the border or the suburbs.
  • Museum prices: 25 and 30 francs at the Kunstmuseum are two different tickets, the collection and the special exhibition.
  • Public holidays and Fasnacht: change opening hours, and some venues close.
  • Tap water in restaurants: not always free.

The sources do not document any typically Basel scam such as fake taxis or fake ticket inspectors. Normal caution is enough: pay at the official terminal, check surcharges, ask for a receipt, keep hold of your card, and if you are driving, read parking in Basel first.

Mid-range outside trade fairs: in a normal week, city-centre rooms sit well below fair-week prices according to the hotel guide. The mid-range hotels in Basel can be filtered by district and price, and the visitor tax adds the BaselCard for trams and museums.
