Where to stay in Basel? The districts compared, with prices and visitor tax

In Basel the district matters more than the stars: the Old Town for museums, Kleinbasel for evenings by the Rhine, the Messe for Art Basel, the station for short journeys. The comparison with distances, verified prices, visitor tax and the traps hidden in the word "central".

Where to stay in Basel? The districts compared, with prices and visitor tax

Almost everything in Basel is close together, and yet the district shapes your stay. If you are here for the museums you will want to wake up in the Old Town; if you are going to the Messe, in Kleinbasel; and if you have an early train, at SBB station.

This page compares the districts by walking time, noise and the trip back at night, gives the prices that are verified and adds the visitor tax. Art Basel week has rules of its own, explained in our guide Art Basel hotels: prices and booking deadlines.

Which district suits which stay?

DistrictTo the Messe on footTo the Old Town on footCharacterGetting back at night

Gundeldingen, SBB station26 to 28 min (Victoria, Novotel)17 to 22 minMixed, traffic, varies a lot by streetvery good until the last service

Where a hotel is named, we calculated the minutes on OpenStreetMap from its door to Messeplatz and Marktplatz. For St. Johann, Bachletten and Riehen they are ranges that depend on the exact address. How the districts sit in relation to each other is shown on the map of Basel.

Who are Grossbasel and the Old Town best for?

Around Barfüsserplatz, Marktplatz and Spalenberg you stay in the middle of historic Basel. The Kunstmuseum, the Minster and the Old Town lanes are on your doorstep, and many lanes go quiet in the evening.

For the Messe, the Old Town is less handy than the word "central" suggests: from Barfüsserplatz it is 20 minutes on foot to Messeplatz. With a suitcase, cobbles, slopes and pedestrian zones are a real obstacle.

For a weekend in the Old Town: the small hotels between Marktplatz and Spalenberg go quickly, the well-rated ones first. The well-rated places to stay in Basel can be narrowed down to Grossbasel on the map, and the visitor tax adds the BaselCard for the tram.

Who is Kleinbasel the right district for?

Rheingasse, Matthäus and Claraplatz have more restaurants and bars than Grossbasel, and in summer the riverbank is where the city meets. If you want to go out in the evening without needing a taxi, this is the place.

The price is noise: a street-facing room hears the terraces, the night owls and, early in the morning, the street cleaners. Ask for a courtyard room when you book.

Who should stay near the Messe and Clara?

Around Messeplatz you are three to ten minutes from the fair entrance, with several tram lines stopping outside. For trade visitors who want to pop back to their room between appointments, nothing is more practical.

During fairs, though, the area is loud and packed, with deliveries, taxis and crowds until late. Outside fair weeks it is a quiet business district with little charm in the evening.

Close to the Messe and the Rhine: Kleinbasel and the streets around Claraplatz have many mid-range hotels within walking distance of the Messe and the riverbank. The three-star hotels in Basel show the distance to Messeplatz on the map; pay attention to which side the room faces.

Is Wettstein the best compromise?

Wettstein lies between the Messe and the Old Town on the right bank and is quieter than Clara. The walk to the Messe stays reasonable at 10 to 20 minutes, and the Old Town is close across the Wettsteinbrücke.

Hotels on the main roads are not necessarily quiet. And in a listing, "Wettstein" can also mean an address further from the bridge, so check the exact street on the map.

When is a hotel by Basel SBB station worth it?

SBB station is where you arrive and leave, with trams in every direction outside. For a night before an early train or for trips into the region, it is the rational choice.

"Near the station" does not mean "near the Messe", though: depending on the street it is 15 to 25 minutes to Messeplatz, rather more south of the tracks. Gundeldingen is functional, with traffic, bars and big differences from one street to the next. How Basel's stations fit together is explained in Basel's stations.

More comfort near the station: around SBB station there are several larger hotels with a 24-hour reception, handy if you arrive late. The four-star hotels in Basel can be sorted by location and cancellation terms; ask whether the Mobility Ticket appears on your confirmation.

Where can you stay somewhere quieter and cheaper?

St. Johann often offers better value and local life, plus the riverside path and the Novartis Campus. Check the distance to the nearest tram stop, as listings like to measure as the crow flies.

Bachletten and Gotthelf are quiet residential areas, and Riehen is calm and close to the Fondation Beyeler. In all three, getting back after a late evening depends on the timetable, and the Messe is far away.

More room for families and longer stays: flats offer a kitchen and space, but rarely a reception or daily cleaning. The holiday flats in Basel only show cleaning fees and deposits at the last step, so compare the final price and ask whether the BaselCard is included.

What does a night in Basel cost?

On 23 October 2026 we checked Google Hotels for the price of a double room for two people, for Friday 13 and Tuesday 17 November 2026. The table shows what the hotels were asking, sorted by district.

Leaving out the luxury hotel, a city-centre double room therefore cost 109 to 243 CHF on a Friday and 144 to 334 CHF on a Tuesday, often more midweek because of business travellers. The cheapest options are simple hotels such as easyHotel, the capsule hotels and the B&B Hotel Basel, which were asking CHF 50 to CHF 79 on the same Friday.

  • Hostel bed: about 35 to 65 CHF a night, according to a 2026 budget guide.
  • For Art Basel: for 17 June 2027, hotels that showed a price were asking 201 to 1,170 CHF, and many showed none yet. A hotel guide (hotelsvetted.com) puts the June mark-up at 40 to 80%.
  • Flat near the Messe: from 120 CHF a night for a single 2026 listing, which does not represent the whole market.

Prices change daily and apply to the nights given. They show the order of magnitude, not the price of your booking.

What comes on top of the room price?

In Basel-Stadt the visitor tax is 4.20 CHF per person per night, with children up to 11 exempt. It no longer applies from the 31st night in the same establishment.

A cantonal fact sheet dated September 2026, however, still gives 4.00 CHF, while Basel Tourism and the canton's website say 4.20 francs. We show both figures until the canton aligns them. In Basel-Landschaft the tax is 3.50 CHF.

Paying the visitor tax gets you the BaselCard, with free trams in zones 10, 11, 13, 14 and 15 and museum discounts. Exactly what the card covers is in getting around Basel.

  • The visitor tax often only appears on the last booking page.
  • Breakfast, cleaning fees and the platform's service fee are often not in the first price shown.
  • A deposit or pre-authorisation on your credit card is common; the amount varies.
  • A late arrival may cost extra if the reception closes early.
  • Hotel garages cost extra in the centre; car park rates are in parking in Basel.

When do you need to book early in Basel?

Outside the big events you can usually find a room in Basel at short notice. Four periods change that: Art Basel in June, Fasnacht in February or March, the Herbstmesse in autumn and the weekends of the Christmas market.

For Art Basel, hotel guides speak of three to four months' lead time, after which hotels in the centre and Kleinbasel may be fully booked. For the other events nobody publishes occupancy figures, so an early, cancellable booking is the safe option.

Are Saint-Louis or Weil am Rhein worth it?

The neighbouring towns across the border are often cheaper, and according to OpenStreetMap the tram runs to Saint-Louis and Weil am Rhein. Depending on the address, though, the trip to the Messe takes 30 to 60 minutes, and the BaselCard is not valid there.

For late evenings, gallery openings or spontaneous changes of plan, the border towns are inconvenient. If you stay in Basel-Landschaft you do at least get the Gästepass+ for regional public transport; details in park and ride in Basel.

What does "central" mean in a listing?

In Basel, "city centre" can mean anywhere between SBB station, the Old Town, the Rhine and Messeplatz, and those points are 15 to 25 minutes' walk apart. An airport hotel can also be called "Basel" on a booking site.

  1. Measure the walk to your main destination, not to the district.
  2. Check the nearest tram stop that is still served in the evening.
  3. Think about the trip with luggage from SBB station or EuroAirport.
  4. Check the journey back after 11pm, when frequencies and connections thin out.

The places worth visiting from your hotel are in things to see in Basel and things to do in Basel. For Museum Tinguely on the right bank, Kleinbasel is the best base.

Lockers for the day between check-out and departure are in luggage storage, toilets and drinking water in Basel, and free car park spaces in Basel parking live. All our accommodation guides are gathered in the Sleep section.

Sleep cheaply, stay central: hostels and simple hotels can be found in Kleinbasel and near the station, with dorm beds and double rooms. The hostels in Basel can be sorted by rating, and here too the visitor tax brings the BaselCard.
